IRS Warns of New Phone Scam

We have heard from a number of client’s and their friends recently who received threatening phone calls from individuals claiming to be IRS agents collecting unpaid taxes. The IRS has issued a warning that it is an extremely sophisticated operation that targets taxpayers throughout the country, including recent immigrants.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid immediately through a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. These individuals are making threats of arrest, suspension of business licenses and deportation if co-operation is refused. Be aware that these scammers may do the following:

  • Scammers may recite fake IRS badge numbers and use common surnames.

  • Scammers may send fake IRS e-mails to support the calls

  • Scammers may recite the last 4 digits of your social security number

The IRS is encouraging taxpayers to be aware of these fake calls. They will never initiate contact with a taxpayer via e-mail and they do not ask for passwords, PIN’s or any confidential information. They will never ask you for a credit card or bank account details.

If you receive one of these phone calls contact us on (800) LESS-4-IRS (800) 537-7447.
